What the fuck?

That was the extent of my thoughts for the next few days.

What the fuck?

Because what the fuck was that kiss about? What the fuck did Alex mean about stopping things before they got too far? And what the fuck was I supposed to do with the tangle of emotions bouncing around in my chest?

I glanced over at Alex, her glasses perched on her nose while she closely examined the massive floor plans in front of her. I’d accompanied her to her many meetings as usual, but fuck if I knew what they were talking about. Any time Alex opened her mouth all I could think of was how good that mouth had felt on mine, how much I’d ached to have her mouth elsewhere. The kiss was all I could think about, which naturally meant everything else in my life promptly took a back seat.

“These aren’t ready to go down to the city council,” Alex told a team of frazzled looking architects. “These dimensions don’t add up correctly, and you’ve left out a few key implementations that they would love to sue us over.”

The most frazzled looking architect, Jonah, dashed forward with his red marker and circled out the errors and discrepancies Alex pointed out.

“Yes, Ms. Bell,” he said quickly. “Right away, Ms. Bell.”

He led his team out of the conference room and Katya closed the door behind them with a muffled chuckle.

“Jonah is hilarious.” She snickered. “Yes, Ms. Bell, right away, Ms. Bell. I know for a fact that he’s mad he didn’t pick those errors up himself.”

Alex sighed and once again my gaze dropped to the unhappy frown on her lips.

“You’d think after fifteen years he’d know when to bring me plans,” she said, tossing the yellow manilla folder onto the glass table. It landed with a solid thunk. “And yet he wants to know why I’ve never asked him to join the company.”

“He still thinks you’ll make him partner?” Katya scoffed, gathering the files and loose documents scattered around the table.

“Men think they can have whatever they want simply by existing,” Alex drawled. She grabbed her coffee and took a sip.

She grimaced.

“Don’t drink that,” Katya scolded. “It’s ice cold, let me grab you a fresh cup.”

“I’ll do it!” I offered, surprising even myself.

Two sets of wide eyes blinked at me.

“Are you sure?” Katya asked, her brows furrowed.

“Totally,” I insisted, avoiding Alex’s stare at all costs. Even if the cost was snagging my foot on the table in my haste to get out.

“I don’t know, I really could just-” Katya began, but I waved her off, already at the door.

“I got it,” I called over my shoulder. “Flat white with a dash of cinnamon.”

I left in the wake of their stunned silence, glad to have an excuse to be anywhere else just then. I rushed down the hall and into the decked out kitchen, making Alex’s coffee with a well-practiced hand.

Ever since we’d kissed, my thoughts had disintegrated and then formed once more with Alex at the center of it all.
